FITNESS fanatics in Bridgwater will be able to work out at all hours if plans for a new gym are given the green light.

PureGym, which runs more than 200 sites throughout the UK, has submitted an application to create a new gym in the unit next to Halfords at East Quay.

The site was previously occupied by Benson for Beds/Ponden Home but has been vacant for a number of years.

The proposed gym at East Quay will comprise a main gym area, studio, free weights and activity zone across 570 square metres of floor space.

There will also be changing facilities and showers, as well as staff facilities.

It is expected the proposal will create 10 full and part time jobs including management roles, personal trainers and cleaners.

The gym will operate on a 24-hour basis, seven-days-a-week which PureGym says will provide gym facilities accessible to the whole community, including those who work irregular shift patterns and unsociable hours.

A spokesman for PureGym said: "Our first centre was established in 2009 and provides affordable membership on a flexible no contract basis.

"Every gym has an excellent range of fitness equipment and machinery, and offers a range of classes and other services such as personal training."

The company says it expects the demand for parking to largely fall outside the main operating hours of Halfords, saying the busiest times will be in the early morning and early evening on a week day.

There will be 'minor external operations' made to the outside of the building which will see new 'double-glazed curtain walling' in grey with black automated folding doors installed.
