A major fire which engulfed Carn Marth hill near Redruth last night is thought to have been started deliberately.

The fire service received 62 emergency calls last night reporting a fire on top of Carn Marth in Redruth from around 9.38pm last night.

A large section of the hill, between Lanner and Carharrack,was engulfed in flames, which could be seen for miles around.

Crews from Tolvaddon, Falmouth and Perranporth used hose reels and beaters to extinguish the blaze. The cause is believed to have beeen deliberate and the police have been informed.

Many people commented onthe blaze on social media, describing it as "unnerving."

Kevin Trebell wrote on Twitter: "Blimey, Carn Marth on fire tonight. Bit unnerving when you live on the side of it, but hopefully they will contain it."

Helen Turner said how she could smell the smoke from her living room adding: "Stay safe everyone, including all those at Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service working hard to keep us safe."
