MAWNAN WI were fortunate to have another beautiful day for their fifth Charity Garden Safari after the forecasts of thunderstorms and the downpour earlier on Sunday morning.

As the bunting and balloons went up, the clouds cleared and the 12 garden owners breathed a sigh of relief.

Many hours had been spent planting, weeding and mowing and the gardens all looked stunning.

Mawnan WI president, Sally Annan said: “It was such a pleasure to visit all of them. Some are well-established whilst others are relatively new and it was exciting to see some really innovative ideas.

"We would like to say a huge thank you to all our members and friends who opened up their gardens to help us raise funds for the Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) and especially to those who took part for the first time.”

From midday, a steady stream of visitors, both locals and holiday makers, could be seen walking around the village. Many ended up enjoying cream teas - the cream generously provided by Rodda's.

WI members were busy in a hot kitchen providing the refreshments and out in the shade of a large oak tree selling books and plants.

Many enjoyed looking at the montage of photos which were produced to celebrate the centenary of women’s suffrage and formed part of Mawnan WI’s EqualiTeas event which took place simultaneously.

People were asked to decide whether they would have been a suffragist or a suffragette - the consensus seemed to be that you would have to be brave to be a suffragette and that these inspirational women should not be forgotten.

Donations are still being received, but so far over £2000 has been raised for CHSW.
