A YOUNG woman who has been forced to endure complicated surgery and is undergoing more this year is taking on endurance of a different kind as she aims to cycle 1,000 km for charity.

Two years ago Annie Jenkins, 30, from Penzance had to undergo surgery for an ileostomy and then last year she had surgery to remove her entire colon and now has to wear a stoma. This year she faces even more surgery.

However, to prove that people living with stomas can be active to, Annie has embarked on a journey to cycle 1,000km before October to raise money for Colostomy UK.

With the help of Penzance Leisure Centre, who have donated her a free membership so she can train and clock up some miles towards her 1,000km target, she is aiming to cycle a marathon at the centre on September 8.

“I am cycling a marathon on Sept 8th," she says on her JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/annie-jenkins4 "There will be an event held at Penzance Leisure Centre that day whilst I slog it out in the gym on the bike. Please please support me where you can! I had surgery two years ago for an ileostomy. The last few years have been quite a struggle with numerous surgeries and complications. This year I face yet more surgery. Completing 1,000km before October will be a massive challenge for me! Please help support my cause."

Colostomy UK is a national charity that offers support and advice to people with stomas and to their families, carers and friends. Colostomy UK also campaigns and acts as advocates for ostomates on the many issues they face going about their daily lives. They want hidden conditions to be understood and accepted by all. Their vision is of communities in which everyone is empowered to reach their potential."

Rees Brown, marketing manager at Penzance Leisure Centre said they were touched by Annie’s efforts and felt it necessary to support her in anyway that the leisure centre could.
