The jury is still out in the trial of a Redruth man accused of raping a woman in Falmouth.

The jury at Truro Crown Court retired this afternoon after hearing a summary of the case against Joseph Khdim Ahmed, 31, of Clinton Road, Redruth.

He was charged with three counts of rape but claimed in the trial that his accuser in fact initiated sexual contact and that they did not have sexual intercourse.

The alleged victim claims that the rape happened on December 3, 2016 after a house party when she says she was given a drink and then taken to another house and raped repeatedly.

In his defence, Ahmed told the court that he suffers from ADHD and Aspergers, and that on the night in question he was attempting to help the young woman find a taxi when she asked if she could come into the house where he was staying to use a phone charger.

He claims that they then spoke for around 20 minutes before she initiated sexual contact with him, and he stopped her after thinking about someone else in his life.

He stated that he was staying at a friend's house as he was taking a break from his relationship of two and a half years.

The alleged victim said that she went out that night for drinks with a friend before going to a house party where the last thing she remembers is Ahmed handing her a drink.

She said that she then remembers being in another house with Ahmed, who allegedly locked her in a room and raped her three times, biting her neck and face.

She says she told Ahmed clearly that she did not consent to sexual intercourse but he carried on anyway.

Defence barrister Ramsay Quaife pointed out that there was no lock on the bedroom door even though the alleged victim claims that Ahmed locked her in the room.

Other evidence submitted in the case included CCTV footage showing Ahmed and the young woman holding hands walking through Falmouth on the night in question.

Cocaine and MDMA were found in the accuser's system the day after the alleged incident, and she admitted to taking MDMA after initially denying it, saying that she had forgotten but later remembered in flashbacks.

Ahmed showed up at another friend's house several hours after the alleged incident in a state of panic; he was not wearing shoes or socks and had to be given a cigarette to calm down.

The verdict of the jury is awaited.
