Dredging River Fal could add 30 new marina berths to Mylor Yacht Harbour

They have asked for pre-planning advice from Cornwall Council over a proposed extension to the existing marina at Mylor Yacht Harbour.

Documents relating to the project consultation state that the extension would add 44 berths to existing pontoons to the north of the existing marina, but they would also have to remove 14 of the existing 'swinging moorings,' which currently attach to a chain on the river bed.

Neil Salter, managing director at Mylor Yacht Harbour, said that they currently have a "healthy demand for berthing services," including a waiting list of over 100 potential customers.

He said: "Our marina project, which began to take shape last year, is still subject to various approvals and areas of consultation before we can even think to put in a full planning application – so while pre-planning advice is an exciting next stage for us we still have a long way to go.”

If plans go ahead, Mylor Yacht Harbour would be capable of berthing a total of 411 boats, with 183 on the extended marina and 228 on swinging moorings.

The current marina was constructed in the early 2000s and is now employs 45 permanent staff members and seven seasonal ones, with 94 additional staff members being employed by the 19 on-site businesses.

If the plans do go ahead, work will take place from the end of September 2019 to March 2020 with all activities taking place during daylight hours.

The dredging itself will most likely take between four and five weeks to complete.

Developers have been in informal and formal consultations since March of last year, when the Packet reported that the project could cost more than £1 million.

A full planning application has not yet been made.
