Mrs C has been very busy planting several fruit trees and a huge rosemary bush, in a bid to attract new guests to her bee hotel.

To date, we have only ever had one guest, and now it looks as if he or she has already vacated, leaving a tiny trail of dusty residue behind.

“Do we really have room for an orchard?” I asked Mrs C.

“We will make room,” she said firmly. “And according to my Bee Keepers Guide, these trees will definitely help. Now go and fetch that compost, please.”

Once the orchard was planted, and Mrs C had swapped her bee-keeper's outfit for something a little more fashionable, it was time for lunch.

The Kitchen is in Old Brewery Yard, just off the old High Street and I’m so happy I found it. It seems to sum up what Falmouth is all about when it comes to innovative, seasonal cooking.

The boys at The Kitchen do an incredible job of sourcing and foraging for local and seasonal produce, to create a very exciting menu - day and night.

Mrs C chose the poached eggs which came with vegetarian bubble and squeak, beetroot, radish and carrots. This is not ordinary cooking – this is exceptional cooking served in the coolest corner of Falmouth.

Each meal is constructed from local ingredients that are either foraged, or grown locally.

I ordered the ‘chef’s plate’ – which was in fact vegan and a lovely mix of heritage tomatoes and grilled mushrooms served with a beetroot puree.

Most days there is usually a fish and meat dish on the menu – all of which are sourced locally. We also sampled a glass or two of a potent pale ale which comes from the Verdant Brewing Company – a small batch brewery that is also based in Falmouth.

Sitting out in the courtyard, bathed in sunshine and eating stunning food is my idea of heaven.

The Kitchen is a shining example of what you can do by using only locally sourced produce with nothing imported. It is also a very relaxed place to eat with fun and friendly staff. Naturally everything is cooked to order so be prepared to wait a little for your meal – I promise it’s worth the wait.

Mrs C ordered another Verdant beer and sat pensively, gazing over the courtyard.

“What are you thinking about?” I asked.

She smiled and tilted her head. “I was wondering whether we should dig a big hole and build a pond in the garden. What do you think?”

“I think I’ll have another beer first, if you don’t mind.”
