Mullion Horticultural Society’s annual show took place on the village cricket field in ideal conditions on Wednesday.

Despite a year of snow, rain, mud and now heat and drought, growers presented an excellent display of fruit, vegetables, flowers and plants.

The show featured arts, crafts, photography and cookery exhibits, while Mullion Community Primary School provided an interesting display of work, and some fine individual exhibits.

Clarence Thomas won Best in show with his gladioli.

Duncan Ratcliffe, headteacher at Mullion Primary School, presented the trophies and congratulated the society on an excellent show.

Ian Harvey, show manager, said: “We expected entries to be down because of the weather conditions, but in fact they were similar to last year. With our previous fundraisers, we have covered the expenses of the show. Thanks to everyone who helped and supported us.”

The marquee was transformed the following evening for the traditional Cornish evening concert by the St. Keverne Band.

Under the direction of Gareth Churcher, they offered a wide range of pieces from foot tappers to beautiful ballads, including an arrangement of “The Old Rugged Cross”, variations on the Beatles’ “When I’m 64”, and music from films. Soloists were Paul Kneebone and Jemma Webb.

This year the An Gof Singers, who also hail from St. Keverne, provided a musical contrast, harmonising well for Cornish favourites, including “The White Rose”, “Cornwall my home”, and “Hail to the Homeland”.

Mullion Cornish Bard, Dick Ormond compèred the evening, which included a raffle in the interval, during which pasties, saffron buns and tea were served.

Chairman Pauline Rowse thanked everyone for a wonderful evening’s entertainment.

Next year's Mullion Horticultural Show and Cornish Evening will take place on July 10 and 11.
