A Falmouth man beat the 1,250 strong competition at the Wheels classic car exhibition, winning best in show with his rare 1935 Jowett Weasel.

The competition was held at the Royal Cornwall Events Centre in Wadebridge on Sunday July 15, and saw a record 3,000 visitors in attendance.

Ken Rogers, from Falmouth, has owned the bright-red classic car for 16 years now.

A record-breaking £24,000 was raised for local charities at Wheels, which is one of Cornwall’s largest classic vehicle shows.

The Best Motorcycle, sponsored by MCB, went to a Triton incorporating 1961 ES2 Norton frame and a 1963 Bonneville engine, built and exhibited by Malcolm Foster of St Dennis. The Best Pre-60, sponsored by Bridge Bistro, was awarded to Ian Miller of St Ervan with his 1951 black Hotchkiss Anjou 4-door sedan and a stunning 1963 VW Karmann Ghia owned by Darren Tippett of St Cleer was named the Best Post-60, sponsored by Reg Hambly.

The Best Commercial Vehicle, sponsored by Cornish Insurance, went to a 1967 ex-RAF Marshall Ambulance, built from a Land Rover, exhibited by Mike Squires of Delabole. Dan Cheesman of Bridport in Dorset took the Best Stationary Engine award, sponsored by Concorde, with a 1915 1hp International ‘Tom Thumb’.

Visitors also enjoyed live music from the Blue Angels and St Minver Silver Band, parade ring events and trade, craft and autojumble stands.

Wheels Chair Stuart Hutchison said: “I’d like to thank everyone who helped us at Wheels this year. Without their hard work, throughout the year and on the day, the event would not run as smoothly or be such a success.”

Wadebridge Rotary President Mick Goward said: “Rotary clubs exist to help people in their local communities and Wheels is Wadebridge Rotary’s main fundraising event.

"This year has been record-breaking in the amount of money raised and many causes and projects here in the town and across Cornwall will benefit as a result, including our headline charity The Chestnut Appeal. We are grateful to all the visitors and the exhibitors, who gave them something wonderful to see.”
