The Feadon Farm Wildlife Centre at the Landal Gwel an Mor resort in Portreath has welcomed two new guests this summer - Bruce and Sheila the emus.

A great hit with all visitors, the birds have settled into their surroundings and even have their own private bath to cool down in during this great sunny spell that the county is basking in.

The second largest bird in the world, the emu can stand up to two metres tall and weigh 60kg living up to 30 years in captivity.

Usually found in the Australian bush or dry scrubland, these super birds can run at a top speed of 40km per hour and dine on seeds, insects and fruit.

It is now believed emus are closely related to dinosaurs and if you get to watch them run at Feadon Farm, they have great similarities to the Gallimimus in Jurassic park.

Kirstie Francis, assistant manager at Feadon Farm, said: “Bruce and Sheila have settled in really well in their field here at Feadon Farm and they really have become a talking point for the visitors and passers-by here. They are funny and inquisitive and they love chasing Feadon Farm’s chief ranger Gary around the field for their food.

"They are also very cheeky and you have to make sure you don’t leave your keys visible to them as they will just take them.

"When they first arrived it was so hot so we got them a bath for the field for them to cool down but they couldn’t work out how to get into it. They couldn’t think to lift their feet up and over the rim to get in so would plonk beside it and only put their neck and heads in the water, which was so funny to watch. We coaxed them in gradually and now they love getting in their bath."

Visitors can learn all about Bruce and Sheila at the Meet the Animals experience at Feadon Farm. Open to visitors and locals, the resort’s expert wildlife rangers share their passion, knowledge and enthusiasm about the wildlife around us.
