It was carnival time in Coverack and St Keverne over the weekend, when both villages held events.

Huge numbers of people came out to support the Coverack event on Friday, which last year had to be called off due to the devastating flooding only two days before.

There was also good support for St Keverne's event on Saturday, which returned for a second year since its revival.

Coverack entrants met on the lawn of the Bay Hotel for judging and Pimms sold by Coverack School, before St Keverne Band led a parade through the village to the harbour for a barbecue by Coverack Gig Club, raffle and prize giving.

Carnival queen Niamh, attended by Senara and Molly, helped give out the rosettes and prizes.

Liz Hanley, one of the carnival organisers, said: " The weather was fine and, thanks to the terrific support from all the participants, visitors and locals, it was deemed a great success.

"We must thank the many supporters from St Keverne who help to keep this local tradition alive - without them the evening would not be such fun."

The judges, Helston Packet’s very own reporter Emma Ferguson, ably assisted by daughter Molly and two guests from the Bay Hotel, Terri and Janice, had a very difficult task as there was a lot of support in the children’s sections, which led to several joint firsts, seconds and thirds being awarded.

The local playgroup Little Fishes came as scarecrows and Coverack’s Monday Club dressed as The Suffragettes.

'Circus De St Keverne' provided some competition for the scarecrows.

Three mermaids from the Mears competed with a lobster, aka Mary, who has been seen many times on the TV since the flood and managed to produce a costume despite still virtually camping within the shell of her flooded home.

The committee would like to thank the raffle ladies, Jill and Barbara, the gig club for the barbecue, St Keverne Band for the music and the Bay Hotel for allowing the event to take place on their lawn, but especially the contestants without whom the Coverack tradition would not continue.

The fun was all repeated in St Keverne the following day, with many of the entrants from the night before returning for a shot at further prizes, along with some new entrants just for this event.

St Keverne's carnival queen, king and attendants were on hand, while the classes were judged by two holidaymakers staying in the village.

St Keverne Fire Station and Porthoustock Coastguards both brought vehicles along for children to explore and there was a range of games, raffle and a barbecue.
