Visitors to the Mullion area will be able to find their way around the “proper Cornish” way thanks to the last cast iron fingerpost in the parish being restored.
Mullion Old Cornwall Society has recently completed the project at the Penhale junction.
Once a familiar sight all over Cornwall, giving directions to walkers and motorists, these historic markers have begun gradually disappearing from the landscape after becoming unfit for purpose and being replaced by more modern signage.
This old road marker was originally cast in Cornwall by Visicks of Devoran but had fallen into disrepair, becoming rusty and broken.
However, with the support of Mullion Parish Council and the Goonhilly Windfarm Community Fund, funds were found for the renovation.
The broken fingers were recast using another Cornish company, Irons Bros of Wadebridge, before finally three Cornishmen – Bruce Bennetts, Ron Endean and David Endean – re-sited the post in the ground to avoid future damage, repainting it to make it legible and looked cared for.

David Endean, from the history society, said: “Thanks must go to Bruce Bennetts who owns the land where the post is sited and whose help with this project has been invaluable, with the use of his machinery for the heavy lifting.
“This is the first project that the Mullion Old Cornwall Society has undertaken for many years but it is hoped not to be the last.”
