Arson is believed to be the cause of a fire in west Cornwal involving 100 metres of gorse this lunchtime.

Crews are still on the scene as they attempt to put out the blaze at Pendeen using beaters and water.

Two crews from St Just and a third from Penzance were initially called to the fire at The Carn just before 12.30pm today, following multiple calls from members of the public.

On arrival the firefighters discovered two acres of gorse alight and back up was requested from St Ives.

A spokesperson for Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: “Crews are making good progress and have a water shuttle in place.

“Approximately 100 metres of high gorse has been tackled with water and beaters. Arson was suspected for this incident.

“Crews remain on scene at this time.”
