It must surely count as one of the more unusual jobs for Porthleven Coastguards - escorting a huge tree trunk into harbour after it was found floating off the coast.

The tree was found out at sea last Friday by local fisherman Jeremy Hosking, who alerted Falmouth Coastguard.

They in turn contacted the team at Porthleven, who worked alongside harbour master Phil Ward and the crew of the Lizard Lifeboat to bring it into safer waters, with a little help from a passing fishing boat.

A Porthleven Coastguard spokesperson said: "It was most definitely a hazard to passing seafarers.

"We worked as a multi-agency team to pull the log into the inner harbour and tether safely.

"We want to thank the public for their sensible and respectful comments whilst we were attending this job."

A Lizard RNLI spokesperson confirmed that the crew had been scrambled shortly after 1pm, to reports of a large trunk of wood floating in the water towards the entrance of Porthleven Harbour.

They said: "This was a potentially dangerous hazard to all vessels in the area.

"Upon arrival on scene the fishing boat Nazarene had securely tied the wood to their vessel.

"The wood was transferred to the lifeboat and was safely towed in to Porthleven and handed to the Porthleven Coastguards and harbour master. Thank you to all involved."
