A PENSIONER with a heart condition was left shaken up after being struck by a car on his way home from a Falmouth doctor's surgery yesterday morning.

Garfield Lawry, aged 72, was making his way back to Meadowbank Road on his mobility scooter when a car pulled out and collided with him.

Mr Lawry claimed: "He jumped the white lines and his bonnet knocked me sideways around three and a half feet. He did stop at first but then said he was in a rush and had to go. I said 'you can't just leave me here' but he drove off towards town."

Mr Lawry worked for County Highways for years before his condition forced him to retire. He has been driving a mobility scooter for 15 years but has never previously had an accident.

"I called the police but they wouldn't come unless someone was hurt. I was too shaken up to go home on my own so I waited for my wife Catherine to come out and meet me.

"He could have killed me - I'm lucky to be here," he said.

Mr Lawry will need a replacement scooter after the impact damaged the steering of his bike.
