Plans for 75 new houses in Penryn have been approved by Cornwall Council.

The new build will be just behind the Asda store on Kernick Industrial Estate, and 26 of the properties will classify as affordable homes.

The houses will be a mix of three-storey apartments and townhouses, along with terraced, detached and semi-detached buildings.

A design and access statement submitted as part of the plans stated: "Whilst undoubtedly there will be aspects of old Penryn that the site proposal can pick up on, the scheme will be less dense and more in character with housing developments in the vicinity at Kernick Park and Trelowen Drive."

The new development will also include open spaces to serve as children's play areas and developers will rebuild the southern edge of the footpath around College Reservoir.

Since they were first submitted in February 2017, the plans have received just six objections from members of the public on Cornwall Council's online planning register.

Some objectors cited the busy road leading from Asda as reasons to oppose the plans, stating that access to the development would be dangerous because of lorries driving to and from the superstore.

There were also three supporting comments from the public, including several from neighbouring residents who felt that the development would be a good use of the land which they claim is currently being wasted and attracting unsavoury characters.

Architects Lavigne Lonsdale have been appointed by Kernick Farm to draw up a design for the development.

The brownfield site was last used as an industrial and construction compound up until June 2015.
