A pensioner who said that he would rather go to jail than pay a parking charge has had the penalty dropped.

Ken Davies, who is 77, believed that four £56 penalties for parking at Custom House Quay were wrongly issued, and refused to send his ticket to the enforcement company unless they paid for postage.

He said: "The parking company, they told me that if I didn't send, yet again, another proof of having the ticket that they would take me to court.

"After the third time I called their bluff and said 'well you take me, and I'll open a can of worms and tell you what's going on down there.' And they tried to appease me by sending me a 'all things dropped.' And I'm afraid it wasn't."

Now Ken is calling for the Creative Parking Solutions, the company in charge of parking at Custom House Quay, to have their contract revoked.

He said: "I don't like threats. It upsets me, it upsets my wife. I don't care, they don't frighten me one bit."

Ken wrote the company another letter on July 15. after the Packet last reported on the dispute, and on July 30 he received a response confirming that the charge had been dropped.

In his letter, Ken wrote: "If you wish to see my parking ticket, send me a return stamped addressed recorded delivery envelope, as I am not prepared to pay postage for something you wish to see, if you have a problem with that then take me to court.

"If you wish to take this matter further then try me for size."

Harbour master Mark Sansom said: "We do not want those who have bought a ticket to be penalised, but we do not have a magic solution to all the problems.

"In most cases it is an incorrect registration that produces the charges but if they can prove they have a valid ticket, we can help them."

Referring to Creative Parking Solutions Ltd, Mr Sansom added: "As one of our contractors, we always monitor their activity and if there are any areas of concern to deal with, we will do so on their merits."
