UNBEATEN and maximum points from their two games in the new South West Peninsula League (West) is as much as anyone at Wendron could have hoped for before the season began.

The clubs from the Jolly's and East Cornwall leagues who stepped up to mix it with the teams who didn't make it into the premier division have been virtually written off before the campaign gets under way by most people in the game.

Accordingly, the six "minor" senior teams in the league are allegedly competing in a mini league of their own to see who will avoid relegation.

If the early results are an indicator, Wendron's chances of staying up are as good as anyone's after they have accounted for two of the bigger fish from the old Carlsberg SWL.

However, there were a few hair-raising moments before Wendron finally landed their second win from their two games.

Leading 4-1 they had to withstand a late rally from Goonhavern who almost snatched a point.

With holidays, unavailability and no official linesmen, manager Steve Webber had to run the line and he came under fire in the 15th minute after Goonhavern claimed they had scored.

Good play saw Goonhavern cut in past Steve Hodson and although Bryan Scoffin took the sting out of the shot it rolled goalwards, but Peter Maclean managed to get back and clear the ball off the line.

"Goonhavern claimed the ball had crossed the line, but I can assure them that it did not and Maclean also said that the whole of the ball had not crossed the line."

Justin Searle almost put Wendron in front when he beat several players but saw his shot go just wide and then Sean Johnson met Hodson's cross but shot just wide of the far post.

The home side took the lead in the 35th minute when a good move saw Johnston's cross cleared to Mike O'Neill who fired his shot through crowd of players to score.

Within five minutes Goonhavern were back on level terms when Andy Miles' free kick was drilled in at the far post by defender Kevin Tonkin.

With half-time approaching Wendron regained the lead when a good ball from Scoffin sent Justin Searle away. He maintained his composure to cut in and fire his shot past John Mitchell.

Wendron made a good start to the second half and maintained their momentum.

Ten minutes into the half Wendron scored a third goal when Hodson broke up a swift break by Goonhavern. A great pass out of defence found Johnston who cut in to beat a defender and shoot past the goalkeeper.

On the hour Wendron looked to be home and dry when they snapped up a fourth goal. Simon Carter challenged the 'keeper when trying to deal with Adam Toy's first drive, but the ball fell to substitute Matt McIlroy who lobbed the ball back over Mitchell's head to score from 25 yards.

Andy Miles hit the post with a free kick, but in the 65th minute he had a little bit of luck when his free kick was deflected past Scoffin by the "wall".

With ten minutes to go Wendron gifted Goonhavern a third goal when Andy Munro nodded the ball back past his own 'keeper and as the ball rebounded off the upright Joe Carlyon was on hand to head into the net.

The visitors maintained the pressure for the dying minutes, but Wendron held on for their victory.

On Saturday Wendron are away to Wadebridge Town.

n The Jolly's Combination League side gave a very good account of themselves at Perranwell on Saturday before going down to a narrow 2-1 defeat.

Perranwell opened the scoring through Marc Rose and when the league leaders added a second through John Blundell it began to look ominous for Wendron.

However, they knuckled down to the task and although it wasn't until four minutes from time that they pulled a goal back through Josh Lord, they gave Perran some uncomfortable moments.
