Helston Harvest Fair Weekend kicks off today with two days of fun for all the family.

A fun dog show is the first event in a busy schedule, taking place outside the Old Cattle Market.

Judging is due to begin at 1pm, with entries accepted from 12.30pm.

Despite the overcast weather, organisers have made the decision to continue with the event, on the green at Coronation Park.

All eyes will then be on the town centre this evening, for the carnival. Groups and organisations in the Helston area, including the Fishermen’s Mission and Mullion Coastguard Rescue Team, will be dressed in costume for a parade led by Helston Town Band and Ferdi, mascot for sponsors Flambards.

There are classes for large and small floats; decorated bikes, buggies and wheelchairs; ‘royalty’ and walkers, with categories for groups, adults and children.

Judging is at 4.45pm at Tesco, with the procession leaving at 6pm to head down Trengrouse Way and Meneage Street to the bottom of Coinagehall Street, before turning around and heading back up the street, along Wendron Street and Godolphin Road, back to Tesco. A road closure will be in place during this time.

The harvest fair wraps up tomorrow with the Horticultural and Craft Show at the Old Cattle Market, where there will be classes in fruit and veg, photography, cookery, crafts and for children.

Judging will take place in the morning, before the show opens to the public from 1.30pm ahead of the prize giving at 4pm.

Other events in the town are being held to coincide with the festival, with the Blue Anchor holding a beer festival with more than 20 real ales and live music, which continues until the end of tomorrow, and Helston Bowling Club holding an open competition today and tomorrow from 9am.
