VANDALS have targeted a spot in Helston for the second time in the space of a week.

Helston Town Council reported on its Facebook page that youths were spotted at the Rugby Club roundabout at around 8pm on Thursday night (September 13), stamping on plants.

They were chased off, the town council said, averting more serious vandalism, but not before they were able to uproot an aeonium and damage some agave.

The council thanked "a vigilant member of the public" and added: "This behaviour is so disappointing, but if we all keep our eyes open we can stop these vandals from ruining our public spaces."

It came just over a week after plants were stolen and damaged at the same place.

The offences took place on the night of Wednesday, September 5, and it is thought it will cost more than £250 to replace them.

Reacting to the first incident, Helston mayor John Martin said: “I am saddened by this targeted theft and damage to our new planting scheme. We have been pleased with the positive reaction we gained from planting two of the roundabouts on the approach to Helston.

"Many thousands of visitors have been able to enjoy the sight of these schemes over a wonderful summer. Helston Town Council would like to develop this scheme to include other roundabouts on the outskirts of the town. If anyone has information regarding this theft, I would encourage them to contact the police.”

The plants were laid in May as part of a joint project between Helston Town Council and Trevena Cross Nurseries.

The scheme used cacti and succulent plants and has drawn praise from many in the community.

Plants stolen included two mother-in-law’s pin cushions, a 12 – 15” tall cactus, a further medium sized cactus and two aeoniums. A further two aeoniums were pulled out but not removed and have subsequently been replanted.

The first incdient was reported to the police.
