A woman who won the Saracen Award for her outstanding service to the local community in Penryn passed away peacefully at the age of 92.

Dulcie Blackmore's health had declined in recent months, particularly after losing her beloved husband of 67 years Bill in November, and she passed away on December 18.

She was born in St Day on June 14 1926 to Stanley and Alice Rowe.

In her late teens and early twenties prior to her marriage, she worked for Marks & Spencer at what was quite a new store (having opened in 1933) in Falmouth. She remained a devoted customer and anyone that knew her would recall her saying that ‘you get what you pay for and you can’t beat M&S quality’.

Sadly, she never knew her mother as she passed away when Dulcie was a baby and as a consequence was brought up separately from older sister Ruby. Dulcie was adopted by a family friend - Muriel Pascoe.

Bill and Dulcie were married at St Gluvias Church on 23rd June 1951. She was particularly proud of their 60th anniversary card from the Queen. The family was completed with the arrival of sons Colin and Alan.

Dulcie regularly attended St Gluvias Church and was Brown Owl (leader) of the third St Gluvias Brownies for 25 years. She was also a member of St Johns, active member of Penryn WI and Federation and wholeheartedly supported Nankersey Male Choir – husband Bill and son Colin being longstanding members.

In 2011 Dulcie was extremely proud to receive the Saracen Award for outstanding service to the local community from Penryn Town Council. The award is described by the council as the "highest mark of esteem and honour" they can bestow.

She took her responsibilities seriously, attending all the civic events up until the last couple of years.

The funeral Service will be held at St Gluvias Church at 11.00am on Friday January 11.
