Coastguards rescued a married couple from the water off a Falmouth beach this morning.

The pair found themselves in difficulty near Castle Beach at around 10.45am and a member of a public attempted to rescue them by throwing a life bouy their way.

The attempt was unsuccessful and coastguard officers and Falmouth Lifeboat attended the scene along with Devon and Cornwall Police.

Coastguard officers managed to rescue the casualties from the water and bring them back to shore.

An ambulance was requested as the pair were suffering from the effects of the cold water.

Paramedic teams checked them over at the scene and discharged them with minor injuries.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: "Police were called HM Coastguard at 10.50am today to Castle Beach following reports of two people in the water.

"The woman in her 60s and man in his 70s were brought safely to land with the assistance of a lifeboat.

"They were checked over by ambulance at the scene and are not believed to be injured."
