THE Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society is joining with Falmouth Art Gallery and the Falmouth Packet to promote and celebrate the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta 2008. From September 10 - 13 Falmouth will be the host port for the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta. This special Tall Ships Race is the centre-piece marking the 500th anniversary of the founding of the port of Funchal in Madeira.

Falmouth Art Gallery will be host to two ship themed exhibitions - Smell the Sea - Feel the Breeze' and Tall Ships by Henry Scott Tuke RA RWS 1858-1929'.

The former, sponsored by TMS Financial Solutions and Arts & Business South West, runs from 1 March - 26 April 2008 and is mounted well in advance to help promote the Regatta.

The latter exhibition Tall Ships by Henry Scott Tuke RA RWS 1859-1929' is to be held during the event from 6 September - 27 September 2008. The paintings, all of tall ships, have been selected by Dr Anthony Phillips and Cornish art expert John F. Tonkin, both of the Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society. The show marks the 175th anniversary of the Poly, as well as providing an additional event for the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta 2008. The Tukes have all been recently conserved and can now be seen as the artist intended.

These exhibitions can both be seen at Falmouth Art Gallery from Monday to Saturday, 10 to 5. Admission is free. For more information about activities and education please contact Natalie Rigby on 01326 313863 Click below to see more details about the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta.
