THE latest attempt to tackle underage drinking in Bridgwater will take place later this month - with an innovative dance performance.

All over the UK, awareness campaigns highlighting the dangers of binge drinking have been taking place, while continued crackdowns on underage drinking have failed to halt the problem.

But on February 28, Bridgwater Arts Centre will play host to the latest attempts to drive home the message, when a touring dance group takes its turn to highlight the dangers.

The Somerset-based Pretty Good Girl dance company will be taking to the stage with "Dyin' 2 b Drunk", a production which is being taken to school and college students all around the county.

Part-funded by the Avon and Somerset Police Community Trust's Drinkaware project, the show will see four professional dancers use a blend of dance, hip hop, rap, funk and contemporary music to tell the story of Amy, who gets drunk in order to 'fit in'.

This is the third national tour by the company aims to make strong, accessible dance available to smaller communities.

Louise Barrett, who wrote, choreographed and directs the show, said: "We have spent two years raising support from many organisations for this show.

"We would like to thank the Police Community Trust for their part in helping us make this happen."

And Trust chair Dr Moira Hamlin said the show was a first step to tackling a wider issue.

She said: "The Trust is delighted to be able to support this valuable project which fits in so well with our aims of educating young people about the misuse of alcohol and preventing the potential for crime and disorder.

"We are very grateful for the support given by the Drinkaware Trust which has enabled us to back this very worthwhile project."
