THE hard work of a Bridgwater voluntary worker has resulted in a hefty grant being made to a young person's organisation in the town.

Bridgwater and District 65 Squadron Air Cadets has been handed £500 by the BT Community Champions award scheme, in recognition of the work done by Warrant Officer Tony Bird, who is also a BT Employee.

The awards are made to BT people on behalf of local community groups, charities and organisations where they work on a voluntary basis.

Bridgwater Air Cadets is one of hundreds that applied for an award and impressed judges with how they would use their grant. The group plans to use its £500 award to purchase new Duke of Edinburgh's Award equipment.

Flt Lt Mortimore, commanding officer of 65 Squadron said: "We are very pleased with our BT Community Champions award.

"At the moment we have limited equipment, with this award we can now purchase much needed tents, stoves and rucksacks which will allow our cadets to take part in many adventurous activities, including Duke of Edinburgh award expeditions."
