DETAILS of an ambitious scheme to demolish Bridgwater's four secondary schools and replace them with state-of-the-art learning campuses will go on display to the public this month (March).

Somerset County Council's Building Schools For The Future programme plans to renew the town's secondary and special schools in a £90million revamp that will create some 4,000 school places.

Design proposals for Haygrove, Penrose and East Bridgwater schools are being unveiled at consultation events on March 11 and 12, while similar consultations for Robert Blake, Elmwood and Chilton Trinity were carried out in January.

The consultations are open to anyone wishing to attend, and will be of interest to parents, pupils, school staff, governors and local residents.

In addition to viewing the proposed plans, visitors will also be able to discuss them with representatives from Somerset County Council and Sedgemoor District Council, including the programme team, advisors and councillors.

The county council's portfolio-holder for Education, Gloria Cawood, said: "These important events will enable Somerset County Council to show how this ambitious project will transform the learning opportunities on offer to pupils in Bridgwater.

"They also provide a vital opportunity to hear what people think about the proposals at this early stage, which will help us shape the plans to reflect their needs as well as their aspirations."

Proposals for East Bridgwater Community School will be on show at the school between 3.30pm and 7.30pm on Tuesday, March 11.

Proposals concerning Haygrove and Penrose will be on show at Haygrove between 3.30pm and 7.30pm on Wednesday, March 12.
