THE regeneration of Bridgwater's neglected Eastover district is expected to move a stop closer to reality on Wednesday (March 19) when a vision for the area's future is outlined to councillors.

It has long been a gripe of traders and residents in the town's east end that the area has been neglected and forgotten by the powers-that-be.

A number of retail outlets in areas like St John's Street and Eastover have closed in recent years, resulting in even more shoppers looking more centrally.

But Sedgemoor District Council's Executive is this week due to receive a new report and presentation detailing plans for a comprehensive revamp of the area.

The report says: "The presentation outlines the start of the regeneration and redevelopment process for Eastover.

"Beginning with a period to gather wider views and evidence on the redevelopment potential of the area, the development brief that is being prepared will build upon previous work conducted by consultants in 2006.

"Within 12 months, this will lead to a supplementary planning document to guide developers and establish the role, function and overall vision for the Eastover area."

Residential development of the area is already underway. The former Bigwood and Staple factory has already secured planning permission, as has the former Chisletts site off Monmouth Street.

But commercial interest from the likes of Asda and Aldi is providing cause for optimism, while plans are also afoot to the make the area more accessible for pedestrians and cyclists.

If approved by the executive this week, the proposed timetable would see a public consultation carried out in June and July, with a final proposal due to be published in January 2009.
