The main stand at Pothleven's Gala Parc has been renamed to commemorate a former long standing member of the club.

The stand, which spans much of the length of the touchline at the ground, has now been renamed as the Joe Pascoe Stand in memory of the club's former secretary who served at the club for 25 years.

Porthleven's chairman Rob Hichens told the Packet: "The club has many good custodians. I played at Porthleven for a lot of years and for me the club needs to bang on about it's history for a bit. To make the new players that are the younger generation at Porthleven that are playing at the club. I want them to understand that the club exists because of these people.

"Without what they did years ago we wouldn't have the foundations to build on it now. The right thing to do is to start telling everybody who these people were. That stand was already dedicated to Joe Pascoe with a memorial plaque.

"The first thing I wanted to do was go in there and change the Porthleven AFC stand and make his name the on the stand visible from all round the pitch. Even when you are walking by you can see it. His relatives in and around the club are still very much involved and whilst we went through the hard times they were around.

"My belief is if we start putting the history around the club, the memories and the people. I want people to know that the club isn't just a place that is stuck there in Porthleven. It is rich in history.

"By doing hat stand it has brought the family in and showed them that we did care for what we did for them and that we hadn't just ignored him and moved on."

It is one of a number of changes at the club in recent months which has also included a full revamp of the clubhouse including a new bar, seating area, toilets and a state-of-the-art changing facilities in the home dressing room.

The club expressed their thanks to Phoenix Signs who erected the new signage on the stand as well as notice boards around the ground, and also for their sponsorship of the Porthleven second team.

Porthleven have had an indifferent start to the St Piran West league season but picked up their first win of the campaign with a 4-1 over bottom-placed Perranporth last week. Goals from Evan Hubbard, Dan Parker, Harry Luckett and substitute Martyn Webster secured the three points for Jamie Webb's outfit.

Their next match sees them host Redruth United on Wednesday, September 14 with kick off at 7:30pm
