WENDRON ended their Carlsberg SW Peninsula League season much as they have regularly done over the months by fielding an understrength side but still performing reasonably well.

Hayle arrived at Underlane having drawn with champions Wadebridge Town and having beaten Porthleven, but United proved their equals with a solid performance.

"We have finished the season with 15 losses and either won or drawn the other 15," said manager Steve Webber. "I'm happy with what we have achieved because people looked at us and said that we wouldn't get a point, so we have proved a lot of people wrong.

"Because we have not been able to field anything like a regular side our form over all has not been consistent, so within the camp we feel that we could have done so much better.

"I thought the outcome for the Hayle game was the correct result, but congratulations to Wadebridge for winning it and commiserations to Porthleven for being pipped at the post in the final week after setting the pace for most of the season."

The game itself was a typical end-of-season encounter with plenty of effort but not too much in the way of football.

Showing five changes from their previous match, Sean Johnston and Justin Searle showed up well for the home side with some probing runs, but the visiting defence was able to snuff out much of the danger.

Mike Newberry went close for United when he got on to the end of a free kick cleared to the edge of the box, but his shot was well saved by Pete Cheal.

Pete Maclean put Matt McIIroy away on the flank, but no-one was able to get a touch to his cross across the face of the goal.

The visitors snatched the lead a minute before half-time when Adam Palmer dispossessed a defender and cut into the box before slipping the ball into the path of Matt Thomas who made no mistake from close range.

Of the two goalkeepers Cheal was seeing much more of the game than his opposite number Jamie Grey, but Cheal was fortunate when a screamer from Pat Shaughnessy flew just inches over the crossbar from well over 20 yards.

Newberry's involvement didn't last much longer after he sustained concussion following a clash of heads with Sean Quinn, but midway through the half Wendron deservedly levelled the scores from the penalty spot after Paris Waller had been brought down in the box. Shaughnessy gave Cheal no chance with the spotkick.

Both sides had chances to nick the result with Johnston going on a jinking run just inside the Hayle half and cutting back in before firing in a shot the skimmed the top of the crossbar.

Not to be outdone the ball arrived at Wayne Quinn's feet on the edge of the box following a corner. He drilled in a shot that twice took deflections of the heads of Wendron defenders before Gray did well to get down to keep the ball out of the bottom corner of the net."
