IT has been a great year for Helston girls. Last year there were no girls' teams at Helston AFC at all, but since that time there are u10s, u12s and u14s.

The u12s have had a fantastic season which started last September. They have won seven, drawn one and lost four, finished runners up in the league behind Penzance who have also had a fantastic season by winning 11 matches and drawing one game which was against Helston.

Since the first game of the season against Culdrose where Helston's goalkeeper had a bad accident during the game, Helston have not had a goalkeeper and the outfield players have been taking it in turn.

Matches have been played with as few as five girls and they have gone on and won these games.

The season finished last Sunday at Hayle FC where Helston girls played Penzance in the final of the Cup.

The game was fairly contested and both teams played very well. Penzance played with a full squad, which included subs, but Helston sent out a team of seven girls and no subs. At half time the score was 2-0 to Penzance. At this moment of the game it was very tight with both teams closing down the opposition.

Helston changed over goalkeepers with Megan Davison for Lois Grant and the changeover paid off as once again Davison went on to score yet another great goal.

As the second half progressed Rosie Pascoe picked the ball up just inside the Penzance half and went past four defenders when running through the centre of the park, and just 15 metres out she struck the ball with her right foot. The ball glided through the air and finished in the centre top of the net. The game lappeaed to be heading for a draw, which would have been a fair result, but Penzance hit the back of the net against to make the final score 3-2.

Helston captain for the day was Megan Davison and the girl of the game in the manager's eyes was Rosie Pascoe.

Helston: Megan Davison, Simone Taylor, Lois Grant, Rosie Pascoe, Jessica Sneddon, Gemma Thorpe and Amber Scrace.
