Exploration works on Church Street, Falmouth, will take place during the week beginning Monday, June 16, to investigate whether it is feasible to install a rising bollard to enforce traffic restrictions in the area.

All shops and businesses in Church Street and the main street will remain accessible to pedestrians throughout the duration of the works and to authorised vehicles during the day.

Cornwall county council's highway maintenance and construction arm CORMAC will excavate one or more inspection holes at the entrance to Church Street opposite the Grapes Inn to identify the exact location of services situated below the road's surface. If the excavations show that it is possible to install a bollard at the location the county council will be able to fully consult on a scheme at a later date.

The work will take place over two or three nights between 7pm and 7am and a road closure will be necessary for the safety of the travelling public and the workmen carrying out the work. The road closure will involve the whole main road through the town from Lower Killigrew Street to Swanpool Street. A five day closure has been provisionally booked however the works will be carried out as quickly as possible and the road will only be closed as long as necessary.

The main street will remain accessible to pedestrians while the work takes place, however there will be no vehicular access between 7pm and 7am. The excavations will be plated over during the day to allow authorised vehicles to enter the street and the normal traffic restrictions will apply.

CORMAC will liaise directly with affected premises including local traders, businesses and property owners. Provision will be made for HGV's delivering to the area at night.

An alternative advisory route will be in place during the road closure, which will be signed in advance of the works.
