The Dave Gardner Trophy, now in its fourth year, was played at Mullion Golf Club and proved as popular as ever.

The competition, a team of four Texas Scramble, was once again well supported and it was nice to see so many of Dave's friends from around the county coming to Mullion to support the day.

Conditions were far from easy - a strong easterly wind and intermittent heavy rain making it difficult for the players. Obviously the conditions suited a team from Cape Cornwall who returned an excellent score of 54.4 to beat a team from Mullion who finished on 58.5.

The competition raised over £1,000 for charity and this will be split between Cornwall Hospice Care and Cancer Funding for Cornwall.

Sharon Gardner presented the prizes to the winners.

The Morcom Cup, one of the oldest trophies in the club was played for over an an 18 hole bogey competition.

It attracted over 60 players and with weather conditions overcast to start with but clearing later, the prospect of a good score was high - but the ever present wind made scoring difficult.

Kevin Goldsworthy, playing off a handicap of 15, returned a score of plus three to beat Adam Corbridge (h-c 16) plus two and win the trophy.

Alan Lieske, just 18 years of age last month, returned a gross 63 to set a new course record at Mullion Golf Club.

A popular member of the junior section, Alan has represented the county on many occasions and has won the under 16 county championship twice.

He is currently the men's club champion at Mullion.

The junior committee was aware that Alan was playing well when it was reported that he was six under after 12 holes in the junior medal. He continued to play some great golf and gained another birdie at the 16th before holding his nerve to par the last two holes to return a gross 63 seven under the course par of 70.

The previous record of 66 was set in 2005 by Leo Acklin, another junior at the time.

Alan who is currently a student at Truro College, intends to take a year out to work at his game.

The course at Mullion is in great condition: Alan obviously enjoyed it with 11 pars and seven birdies on his card, . His handicap of five has been reduced to three by this record shattering round.
