Falmouth based Kernow Lightning returned home without points but full of pride after their first ever league match, writes Ben Leach.

Kernow Lightning roller hockey team faced off for their first ever league matches at North Molton Sports Centre this weekend.

The sport, which ice essentially ice hockey played on a hard surface with inline and quad skates, was huge in the UK in the 90's and early 00's and is now making a big comeback on a national and international level.

Competing for the first time in the highly competitive BRIHA league, the Lightning found it tough going, but performanced admirably against far stronger and vastly more experienced opposition.

The Lightning were defeated 15-0 by the Kernow Wizards, 4-5 by the Weymouth Pirates, 17-2 by Plymouth Eclipse and 8-0 by Plymouth Rockstars.

Depsite the heavy defeats, Graham Nye, making his first ever appearance in goal after only two training sessions performed very well and shows much promise.

Ben Martin (2), Jamie Edwards, Paul Sewry, Harry Crosbie and Mark Finch did brilliantly to score goals against very talented opposition net minders.

The Lightning train at Falmouth School sports hall on a Sunday afternoon and are always open to new players and fans.
