Is your surname Treloar or are you a long-lost relative of Sir William Purdie Treloar? - the same Sir William who in 1906, as the then Lord Mayor of London, started an appeal to fund his vision that London children with non-pulmonary tuberculosis could recuperate in the country air, attend school and learn a trade so that they might later support themselves.
This was a revolutionary idea at the time when young people with disabilities were marginalized by society but his dream and dedication led to the formation of The Lord Mayor Treloar Hospital and College in Alton, Hampshire in 1908.
One hundred year's on the fact that Treloar Trust which supports Treloar School and Treloar College is continuing to serve the changing needs of disabled young people, from all over the UK, to enable them to achieve their goals and manage their lives, is testimony to Sir William's original vision.
As part of Trust's Centenary Celebrations which culminate over the weekend of September 13/14 the Treloar Trust is holding a sponsored walk - Pass the Pasty' - from Helston (the Treloar family home) to Alton in Hampshire (the current site of Treloar School and College) one hundred years to the day the College and Hospital first opened their doors.
If your surname is Treloar, you are related to a Treloar or you are in any way related to the great man himself, Sir William Purdie Treloar, then the Trust would love to hear from you.
"The Pass the Pasty' walk will start in Helston, Cornwall on September 1 and it would be great to have some true Treloarian's to start the walkers off," said Steve Speczyk, parent of a former Treloar student and event organizer. "It would also be great to meet any former Treloar students that might be local to the start."
The walkers will be pushing a giant Cornish pasty as they pass from county to county and town to town, arriving in Alton on Saturday September 13.
Those with the right credentials and would like to be involved in the start of the walk should contact Denise Gillies on 01420 526537, email fundraising@treloar.org.uk, or call Steve Speczyk on 07796 266603.
