A FUNDRAISING appeal for Cornwall’s first Disability Cricket Team smashed its £10k target this week after securing Extra funding on top of donations from the general public.

The Crowdfunder was launched at the end of May to raise £10k, just under half the amount needed for the project by Cornwall Cricket Board. As that target has now been reached a new stretch target of £20k is in place, which if reached will cover the majority of the £22k needed for the project.

Cornwall Cricket Board is aiming to provide those that already take part in Disability Cricket with the opportunity to be able to grow their skills further by joining the Super 9’s County Representative Team and competing across the South West.

To make this possible they need to raise funds to cover the costs including cricket protection for all abilities and disabilities as well as travel expenses and venue hire.

Disability Development Officer Painter said: "We need the "stretch" funding to help cover the high travel costs incurred by having away matches in South Wales, Gloucestershire, Dorset, Somerset and Devon.

"The costs are higher than normal because almost all our players cannot travel independently and so the party size and number of cars needed rises considerably. Ideally we would be able to "stretch" to hiring a mini bus!"

Managing Director Joe Skinner added: "Firstly it’s fantastic that we have been able to get to where we are at this moment, and I thank everyone for their kind donation.

"The next goal of achieving the stretch target will enable us to fully embrace the super 9s activity against other counties in the South West with confidence and ultimately give the players and their families a great experience.

"It’s a hugely exciting time for Cricket in Cornwall and we want to make cricket a game for everyone."

Cornwall Cricket Board provides adults and children aged 5 years and upwards with the opportunity to take part in the sport across the county. It is also the official governing body for all cricket in Cornwall and is responsible and accountable to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), the National Governing Body, for the strategic management, development and conduct of the sport.
