Mullion remain in contention at the top of division three west following their comfortable eight wicket win at home to Penzance seconds on Saturday. It leaves Mullion in second spot, eight points behind leaders St Just seconds.

The visitors elected to bat but got off to a poor start as Dan Gillman got rid of openers Tom Wilson and Craig Nicholls with only 14 on the board. Jock Britton (37) and Robert Heath (17) staged a partial recovery until Kevin Bosustow wrecked the middle order. In an inspired spell he took five for 24 from his 12 overs, four of which were maidens.

Charles Mitchell offered some resistance to make 32, but with late wickets for Tom Retallack and Stephen Green the visitors were bowled out for 142 in the penultimate over.

Bosustow and David Dale then opened with a stand of 59 before Dale was bowled by Wilson for 24. Jim Pearson and Bosustow then joined forces to win the game. Pearson was out for 22 with the score at 130. Bosustow, in game to remember, ended on 61 not out including two sixes and nine fours. The winning runs came with over 17 overs to spare.

Penzance certainly rang the changes using nine bowlers.

On Saturday Mullion face a tough prospect with a visit to fifth placed Barripper.

Penzance 142 (J Britton 37, C Mitchell 32; K Bosustow 5-24, D Gillman 2-33,), Mullion 143-2 (K Bosustow 61no, D Dale 24, J Pearson 22). Mullion (20 points) beat Penzance (four) by eight wickets.

It was a good day all round for the Mullion club as the seconds won at Penzance thirds by six wickets to remain in contention at the top of division six. They are in equal second spot with Mt Hawke and Porthtowan and just three points behind leaders Camborne thirds.

The hero at Humphrey Davy was Josh Mathias who produced magnificent figures of seven for 29 from 11.4 overs. He got good support from David Fowles who took three for 40 at the other end as the home team were dismissed for 70 inside 23 overs. Only opener Robert Angove made 21 to offer much resistance.

Mullion lost Phil Wheatley and Jack Casley with only nine on the board, but the nerves were settled as Keith Warbis (22) and Daniel Johnson (14) took the total to 52 before the third wicket fell. Victory came in the 22nd over.

Stithians seconds visit Garro lane this Saturday.

Porthleven were at the wrong end of one of the upsets of the day on Saturday. They went down to a one wicket defeat at Botallack to give the West Penwith club their first win of the season, at the 12th attempt.

Missing a number of regulars Porthleven elected to bat and after losing Dean Bray with the score at 25 Ron Williams (38) and Paddy Gardner put on 53 for the second wicket. Gardner was run out from a direct hit after hitting six fours. The innings fell away however with only Jamie Salter (18) made much impression as the innings ended on a modest 141 all out.

Daniel May and Luke May both took three wickets.

William Jelbert made 50 for the home team but Jeff Carvelly's five for 48 from 12 overs and Mark Pollard's three for 36 kept Porthleven in the game.

Pollard, having been out with a long-term injury, was forced into first team action due to the number of players absent and bowled a tight spell. Lee May tried to attack Carvelly but only succeeded in playing on. Adam Young then had Lee Brewer caught behind and the tail was well and truly exposed.

As the total edged closer Paul Francis took a great catch at second slip off Carvelly. The game finally swung in Carvelly's last over as Dougie Whittaker survived two lives. This proved to be the last chance, as in the next over, the first ball somehow just cleared the stumps. The second a perfect leg stump yorker no number 10 should ever dig out, but somehow did, the next a big swing, right back over the bowlers head for a maximum.

A cruel defeat for Porthleven, but not enough runs on the board in the end proving their downfall.

A home game with Penzance seconds is on the agenda for Porthleven this Saturday.

Porthleven 141 (R Williams 38, P Gardner 34, J Salter 18; D May 3-21, L May 3-27, D Tregear 2-30), Botallack 144-9 (W Jelbert 50; J Carvelly 5-48, M Pollard 3-36). Botallack (18 points) beat Porthleven (seven) by one wicket.

It proved to be a vital wicket as only Chris Martin with 34 and Craig Firth with 20 could get the better of the St Levan attack.

Helston were bowled out for 159 in 38 overs with Paul Angove taking 4 for 32, John Sellors 4 for 63 and Richard Harmer for 13.

St Levan's reply got off to a disastrous start as opener Lee Penrose was run out in the third over. A second wicket stand of 40 between Geoff Preece and Chris Williams then set St Levan on their way but when Preece was dismissed for 33 the innings collapsed to 94 for 7 off 32 overs.
