A Canadian canoe and its crew due to arrive in Falmouth at the weekend were held up because of bad weather. But I am told by the National Maritime Museum. They are now due to arrive on Friday.

The unusual craft will still find a welcoming committee led by town mayor Mike Varney on the quayside when it does arrive.

The canoe is being paddled by students from the University of British Columbia and their event co-ordinator, Chris Cooper, and is part way through a circumnavigation of the British Isles.

Covering 4,000km in a 42ft Montreal Canadian canoe is designed to bring together, inspire and captivate youth and adults from Canada and the British Isles for a journey of a lifetime. It provides the opportunity for youth and adults to learn about team work, life skills, environmental research, history and culture while participating in the innovative challenge.

Mike Varney will present the team with a commemorative plaque from Falmouth and receive a hand carved cedar paddle from the crew when they do arrive.
