The proposed surface for new pavements through Falmouth town centre has been compared to vomit.

The damning opinion was made at Monday's meeting of Falmouth town council planning committee, who discussed the "tester" section of pavement that has been created outside Argos.

Cornwall county council has laid a section of pavement in the proposed surface, to gauge opinion. If it is well received, the plan is to use the surface through the whole of the town centre, to differentiate between road and pavement and improve the appearance of Falmouth.

But councillor Vicky Eva said: "It looks like somebody has been sick on the tarmac."

There was a similar feeling from the rest of the councillors, with Falmouth mayor Mike Varney branding it "disgusting."

Mr Varney said: "I've just been out there and I was absolutely disgusted. It looks like an afterthought, saying 'Falmouth will accept any old rubbish'."

He said he had already written a letter to divisional surveyor Peter Tatlow expressing his opinion. "I've certainly told him in no uncertain terms that no way in this world would that sort of surface be accepted in Falmouth and certainly not in the main street, which is a conservation area," he added.
