THIS weekend, a Cornish town will celebrate its long association with the tin mining industry along with one of the Duchy’s most famous foods – the Cornish pasty.

Redruth welcomes the return of its annual Mining & Pasty Festival which will take place on Friday, September 8, Saturday, September 9 and Sunday, September 10.

The festival is returning for the first time in three years, and a weekend full of activities has been planned to take place across the town.

The event kicks off with a Miners’ Tribute Walk which starts on Friday (September 8) at 4pm. The route begins from Fore Street and ends at Wheal Uny. The procession will be accompanied by music, storytelling, and memories of former miners. The finale will be the smoking of the chimney stacks at the end of the evening.

There will also be competitive elements to events held on Saturday, September 9 with the community being invited to enter their own pasty creations into the homemade pasty competitions. Categories for this competition include Best Cornish Pasty (including a class for under 18s), Most Creative Edible Pasty and Best Crafted Pasty.

This year, a new event has been announced for this much-loved event. The Redruth Pasty Relay Championships will see teams of at least ten pass a salt dough pasty up Fore Street as quickly as possible. Sponsors of this event, Rowe’s Bakers and the Cornish Pasty Association have provided prizes for the competitions.

The course will start by the Welly Dogs at Tatey Court at 11am, and finish at The Miner statue.

Winning teams will be awarded special pasty-themed prizes.

Alice Lamming, community projects manager at Redruth Town Council said: “We can’t wait to welcome the community of Redruth into town to join in with the festival.

“As well as the competitions, we have live music, performances, a Diaspora Food Village, market stalls, Buttermarket, hard-hat tours and craft workshops including crimping practice.

“There’ll be so much to keep the whole family entertained all day!”
