With Christmas less than two weeks away, a Cornish hotel has hosted its first-ever sustainable festive market.

The Headland in Newquay held its inaugural sustainable market on December 9 and featured more than 20 stalls which offered a wide range of environmentally responsible gifts.

The market was a joint venture with Beth Noy, the founder of Plastic Freedom which sells a huge range of plastic-free and recycled plastic items ranging from recycled bags and refillable candles to Christmas decorations and wrapping paper.

Falmouth Packet: As well as providing a space for people to buy some unique and original gift ideas, from clothing and accessories to candles, homeware, books and local food produce, the market also helped promote sustainability in Cornwall.

Hotel family director, Veryan Palmer said: “We wanted to do something that would help shine a light on all the local businesses and organisations that are committed to operating as sustainably as possible.

“We’re passionate about celebrating what makes our community special and the market was the perfect way to spread the word and showcase some amazing local products.”

Also based in Newquay, Waterhaul uses discarded plastic collected from the coastline to make sunglasses, eyewear and a range of other products including beach clean kits and plastic litter pickers.

All proceeds made from the event, have now gone to Newquay Food Bank.

The Headland is also working towards its accreditation with EarthCheck, the world’s leading benchmarking and certification provider to help them reach their targets.

Attention now turns towards the spring with the hotel aiming to host another sustainable market. Brands which are interested in taking part in this event should contact marketing@headlandhotel.co.uk for more information.
