Bolingey Barbarians raised nearly £800 for charity at the Cornish Pirates versus Nottingham game.

Bolingy Barbarians chairman Roger Mead said: "It was a great 41-17 victory for the Pirates.

"Both sides grappling with the blustery conditions with a mix of territorial high ball brinkmanship and a willingness to run the ball through the hands for some splendid phases of play, providing a high scoring spectacle for the fans."

He went on to also celebrate the successful collection for local children's charities: "Our endeavours to help children’s charities in Cornwall through our collection was equally successful.

"We raised nearly £800 thanks to the generous support of all those who kindly donated to our appeal."

Offering his congratulations to the deserving Cornish Pirates, Mr Mead extended special recognition to the team's dedicated owner, Sir Richard 'Dicky' Evans, who was recently awarded a knighthood in the New Year Honours.

Highlighting the close relationship between the club and the Barbarians, Mr Mead also made a special mention of the club’s Media Liaison Officer, Phil Westren.

He said: "Phil has championed the Bolingey Barbarians cause for years and has been instrumental in making us feel welcome, highlighting our charitable work with his informative commentary to the rugby faithful at the Mennaye.

"We are delighted to make Phil an ‘Honorary Barbarian’ and hope he enjoys wearing his black and gold tie as much as we do."

Caught by surprise, Mr Westren said: "I am taken aback by such kind gestures.

"The Bolingey Barbarians form such a fine and unique group of people, real rugby stalwarts who are commended for all their great, and still ongoing, charitable efforts made."
