A 29-year-old man is in custody this morning after a small fire started at Penzance Railway Station in the early hours of this morning - arson is suspected.
Firefighters were called to the station at around 3.55am this morning after police in the area reported seeing smoke inside the railway station following a possible burglary.
Two appliances were sent from Penzance Fire Station and located a small fire which two crew put out using breathing apparatus and a hose reel.
The fire service said in a statement that arson is suspected.
“Fire Control were contacted by police requesting assistance as officers dealing with an incident had noticed smoke inside the railway station at Penzance. Two appliances were mobilised from Penzance.
“On arrival crews found a small fire which was extinguished by two firefighters in breathing apparatus using a hose reel jet and positive pressure ventilation (PPV) fan.
“The cause of the fire is suspected to be arson.”
Devon and Cornwall Police said a 29-year-old man from Torquay has been arrested on suspicion of burglary and arson and remains in police custody.
They said: "Emergency services were called at 3.55am today [January 26] to Penzance Railway Station following report of a possible burglary.
"A 29-year-old man from Torquay has been arrested on suspicion of burglary and arson. He remains in police custody at this time."
