Multiple 999 calls resulted in volunteer coastguards rushing to a Cornish beach on Saturday.

HM Coastguard Portreath Rescue Team had received reports from a number of people about a surfer in difficulty in the Godrevy area.

The team were just gathering for more information when there was a follow up call from the coastguard rescue centre, to say that the surfer had managed to return safely to the beach.

However, the Portreath coastguards continued to Godrevy, to check on the welfare of the surfer.

It later transpired that they had suffered a medical condition, but had been able to get themselves to safety before leaving.

A Portreath Rescue Team spokesperson said: “The team were tasked at approximately 4.30pm following multiple 999 calls to reports of a surfer in difficulty in the Godrevy area.

“As the team were assembling further information came in to say they had self-recovered to the beach and we were then tasked to meet and check on the welfare of the surfer.

“Once on scene the team could liaise with some of the callers to gather further information and to ascertain that the casualty had suffered a bout of cramp but managed to recover themselves to the beach before leaving.

“Once we were happy that nobody else was in danger we could return to our station and pack away.”

Despite all being well in the event, the members of public who called in the potential emergency have been thanked for their quick-thinking actions.

“Thanks to all the onlookers that had their eyes peeled and could phone it in and provide the necessary information on our arrival,” added the Portreath spokesperson.

If you are in trouble at the coast, or you see someone who may be, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
