A series of St Piran’s events will take place in Helston today (Saturday) leading up to the feast day for Cornwall’s patron saint on Tuesday.

The Helston Bakes Competition is asking bakers to take along their homemade Cornish goods to the Guildhall between 4pm and 5pm today, for judging.

There are classes for traditional pasty, hevva cake and Cornish splits, each in categories for 16 and under, and over 16.

Then, this evening, Helston’s Lantern Parade is returning to light up the town.

Taking place at Coronation Park, with a procession around the lake, groups will gather with lanterns from 6pm, ready to begin the procession at 6.30pm.

Before that there will be live music from Helston Town Band and performances telling stories of Helston, from MADE, with gates opening at 5pm.

Truro City of Lights has been working with local primary school children and community groups to create lanterns for the parade.

Last year’s lanterns included an engine house, Helston inventor Henry Trengrouse and St Piran himself, all made from willow and tissue paper.

This year's parade will be the third since it began in 2022, and it always attracts lots of support from both those taking part and watching.

The event is being supported by Helston Town Council and Museum of Cornish Life, with free admission.

Then on St Piran’s Day itself, Tuesday, March 5, Helston will be celebrating in typical fashion with music at The Blue Anchor. Join for singing, Spingo beer, an open fire and Trelawny Shout at 9pm.
