Emergency roadworks on one of Helston's busiest roundabouts are causing drivers an extra headache this afternoon.

Motorists are being warned to allow extra time this afternoon (Wednesday) due to long delays across the town.

There are now additional four-way traffic lights just off the roundabout heading to Falmouth or Redruth, by Texaco garage.

Helston Town Council has explained that Wales and West are carrying out emergency road works on Clodgey Lane due to a gas leak and they are not due to be finished until March 12.

The traffic lights affect traffic in Godolpin Road, in addition to vehicles approaching from Clodgey Lane and the direction of Falmouth Road and Redruth Road.

They caused particular delays at school run time, with queues stretching back long distances in every direction.

There were reports of cars queuing as far as the Godolphin Club in Wendron Street, while coming along Clodgey Lane traffic was at a standstill past the lights at the top of Trengrouse Way, reaching the cricket club.

The vans and workers have now left for the evening (as of 4pm) but the traffic lights remain in place.

At the same time, there is currently a full road closure order in place in Church Street until March 14, while Wildanet work in the road.

The closure order is for 24 hours a day, including at weekends.

However, while the signs are up saying the road is shut, and the closure order is in now 'live', residents on that road say work has yet to start and currently traffic can still pass through freely.

It is worth noting though that work could start at any time now.

When in force, the diversion takes drivers along Clodgey Lane instead - where they will now run in to the emergency road works.

With delays taking place in and around Helston, one local primary school has urged parents to ‘allow extra’ time when picking up their children from school this afternoon.
