A couple who celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary this week have shared what they think is the secret to a long and happy marriage.

On Saturday (March 9) Harry, 88 and Marion Wright, 85, celebrated their anniversary at their home on Tenderah Road in Helston, with lots of visitors throughout the day.

Friends and neighbours presented the elderly couple with flowers, no fewer than three cakes and cards to celebrate the special anniversary.

The couple first met at The Crown Hotel in Brackley, Northamptonshire where Marion worked at the time, and Harry – a former farmer - was a customer.

However, Harry admits that the start of their relationship was ‘hit and miss’. He explained: “We met 50 years ago when Marion worked at the hotel.

“At first it was a bit hit and miss; I didn’t get in touch with her until she went back up to North Wales.

“So, I contacted her then and then it was long distance, going up to North Wales every other weekend to see her.”

Eventually, Harry and Marion were married on March 9, 1974, in Brackley.

The couple remained in Brackley for a while but after experiencing a break-in at their home, they decided to move. They moved to Queensland, Australia where they stayed for five years before moving to Helston where they became involved with the Methodist church and local drama groups.

Harry is currently a member of the Kerrier Male Voice Choir and the St Aubyn Singers.

When the Packet asked Marion what she thought the secret was for a long and happy marriage, she simply said: “Tolerance.”

Marion and Harry have also thanked the Helston community for making them feel welcome when they arrived all those years ago.

Marion said: “Thank you to the people in Helston for making us feel so welcome.”
