A much-loved local bakery popular for its traditional Cornish pasties has revealed exciting expansion plans including two new shops in Cornwall.

The Cornish Oven has announced this week that two more shops will be opening in Cornwall, including one in Truro and a smaller shop in Helston.

The first shop set to open soon is the smaller ‘grab and go’ style shop affectionately named ‘Helston Dinky’ due to its size. It will be based in St John's Business Park next to the busy Helston to Penzance Road.

Helston Dinky will mirror its sister shop on Clodgey Lane (located between Tesco and Texaco) and will sell traditional Cornish Pasties, a selection of cakes, fresh sandwiches, salads, snacks and crisps, as well as hot and cold drinks.

“Helston Dinky will be a smaller scale of the Clodgey Lane shop,” said Louise Parr, PR, and social media manager for Cornish Oven. “It’s like Tesco Express – people can just grab and go, especially if they are heading to the beach, or going for a walk at Penrose.

“It’s also going to benefit people who have to commute each day, and those who drive for a living, such as taxi and lorry drivers, they can come in for their coffee and pasty daily before setting off to work.”

Giles Williams who owns the Cornish Oven with his wife Ingrid, has had his eye on the building – the former home of Aztek Computer Care in 2016 for quite some time.

With the current shop doing so well, with long queues outside the shop entrance door being seen on most days, the couple decided to open a second shop for people living in the area and surrounding villages such as Breage, Ashton and even Praa Sands a chance to grab something to eat or drink, when they pass without needing to travel through the town.

The new shop is expected to officially open in around three to four weeks and will be open seven days a week.

Between Monday and Friday, Helston Dinky will be open from 7.30am to 3pm, and at weekends it is expected to stay open slightly later.

Louise told the Packet what the new shop meant to the team, and why they wanted to open another shop. She said: “We love Helston so much that we have decided to open another pasty shop.

“We are very excited about the shop opening and looking forward to meeting new customers – as well as our current loyal customers. It will be much better for those in a rush.”

Once the shop opens, Kate who is the current manager of the site on Clodgey Lane will oversee the day-to-day running. However, there are currently two job vacancies available. These include an assistant manager and a part-time pasty shop assistant.

And Cornish Oven’s expansion plans don’t end there. Louise explained: “We are excited to reveal that we have just signed a contract to open a new shop on Lemon Quay in Truro.

“The shop is going to be in the building on the right-hand side of Tinner's Court - the walk-through bit. It was most recently a calendar pop-up shop, and formerly a charity shop.”

However, an opening date for the shop in Truro has yet to be revealed.

The Packet will update you on the Truro shop when more information becomes available.
