Closure of Abbotts Catering Supplies: Steve Abbott to retire

Steve Abbott, co-founder of Abbotts SW Ltd, has announced his retirement, marking a significant milestone for the company.

With his departure the focus on the company will now shift, resulting in the closure of its catering supplies division Abbotts Catering Supplies, while Abbotts Event Hire will continue to operate and expand.

Founded by Steve and Catherine Abbott in 1987, Abbotts Catering Supplies has been a respected provider of catering supplies to the hospitality industry for more than three decades.

In 2009 Abbotts diversified its services to meet the demands of the industry, with the establishment of sister company Abbotts Event Hire, based on the Barncoose Industrial Estate in Redruth.

However, following Catherine’s passing in February 2020, and Steve Abbott's semi-retirement the same year, the company found itself in a period of transition.

Their son, Rich Abbott, took over both sides of the businesses, successfully steering them through the challenging times.

Led by Rich, the event hire business said to have “thrived”, earning a reputation as a top supplier for weddings and events, offering everything from plates and kitchen equipment to furniture, luxury toilets, and fridge trailers.

Celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, it has evolved into a 'one-stop-shop' for weddings, parties and festivals, with clients across Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, and Dorset.

Speaking about the closure of the catering supplies division, Rich said: “As we wrap up this chapter, it's not just the end of an era, but an opportunity for something new and exciting for the business.

“Huge thanks to mum and dad for paving the way and showing me the ropes. I'm excited to see where this next phase takes us.

“We have had an amazing few years with Abbotts Event Hire, from Glastonbury Festival to the G7 summit, and being a part of so many couples’ special days. I can't wait to continue my parents’ legacy and take the business to new heights!”

The catering supplies division will continue to supply customers for its final Easter, and all orders will be fulfilled, but it will not be taking any more orders from April 1.

Rich now aims to focus on building and driving the event hire business forward, to offer more high-quality products and supply even further afield.

Reflecting on his decision to retire, Steve said: "Thank you for the continued support and loyalty of our customers.

“It’s been a wonderful experience growing this company, and Rich will continue to build the Event Hire business from strength to strength, but for me, it’s time to take a well-earned break!”
