A café in Newquay has launched its very own sunflower growing competition.

The Garden Café Newquay will be distributing free sunflower seeds to customers with every purchase.

The Reach for the Sun competition offers a prize of a special treat at the café for the most impressive sunflower posted on their social media over the summer.

It is part of the café's commitment to community engagement and celebrating nature.

Karen Hoyle, owner of The Garden Cafe, said: "We're excited to see our community come together and showcase their green-fingered talents".

Participants can collect their complimentary sunflower seeds from The Garden Café in Trenance Gardens, Newquay starting Wednesday 10th April 2024, with the competition running through into summer.

The café will be looking in mid-summer to find a winner or winners chosen from all the photos posted to its social media so there is plenty of time to cultivate a winning bloom.

To grow the seeds, the café advises finding a small pot or even a coffee cup or mug and placing the seeds in some compost on a windowsill to start the growing process.

Once hardy enough towards the end of May, the plant can be potted up in a border or pot outside.

Adding to the benefits of the competition, Ms Hoyle added that sunflowers are "not only stunning to behold but also symbolise vitality and positivity".

They are also part of the RHS plants for pollinators campaign and will encourages the bee population to thrive.

For more information on how to participate, patrons can visit The Garden Cafe located at The Heritage Cottages, Trenance Gardens Newquay.

The national award-winning Garden Cafe is known for its commitment to providing a welcoming environment where customers can enjoy delicious Cornish fare amidst lush greenery.

This sunflower competition, it is hoped, will continue to promote and encourage an interest and respect for nature and wildlife in the community.
