New figures have revealed that more than 50 domestic abuse crimes a day are reported to Devon and Cornwall Police.

Following an investigation by Personal Injury Claims UK the data revealed that the force recorded a total of 20,972 domestic abuse crimes in the last year alone across the county.

Results obtained from Freedom of Information Requests reveal that between November 2022 and October 2023, there were 14,495 female victims of domestic abuse in Devon and Cornwall, making up 69% of the figures.

A further 5,296 victims were men, equating to 25%. Six per cent of victims had other gender identities or the gender was recorded as ‘unknown’.

The highest number of domestic abuse crimes recorded across the two counties was in June 2023, with a staggering 2,107 reports. The lowest figures during that period were logged in November 2022, with 1,251 crimes.

“Domestic abuse affects people from all walks of life and in many different ways,” said a force spokesperson.

On the Devon and Cornwall Police website, there is support for victims including an explanation of Clare’s Law.

The Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme (DVDS), also known as Clare’s Law, enables the police to disclose information to a victim or potential victim of domestic abuse about their partner’s or ex-partner’s previous abusive or violent offending.
